Interviews > MC LowQui - Essence of Chi, Uncertified Author : Interviewd by Mirko / Date : 25-07-2004 18:18
What are your plans for 2004? My main aim is to keep having fun doing what I’m doing, hyping raves and pushing drum n bass forward wherever possible! Personally I would like to visit as many new venues as possible as I get a real buzz out of seeing how different crowds around the world react to d'n'b. I'll also continue to write more lyrics and hopefully by the end of 2k4 I’ll get some vinyl out with my vocals on also.
Any particular event you enjoy / dislike performing at? My two favourite regular events are traffic (2nd Friday, Rhythm Factory, Whitechapel) and Essence of Chi (3rd, Wednesday, Plan B, Brixton). Both are focused on quality music and both have a very friendly atmosphere. Traffic has grown from strength to strength over the past two or three years and it’s been great to be a part of that journey. Essence of Chi is a new event but the nights so far have been wild! I don’t really dislike any events I mc at as there are always moments through a night, wherever I play, that remind me why I love raving to good music alongside good people.
Which artist(s) do you look up to the most in the scene? I have a massive amount of respect for all the original drum n bass legends who helped create the scene (and corrupted me through beatz from a young age!). MC wise it has to be GQ & Stevie Hyper D (RIP). I also respect anyone who is prepared to stick to what they enjoy and keep pushing the boundaries.
Which MC's / DJ's do you enjoy working with the most? I generally mc on my own but I also regularly work with Lady I-One (Future Thinkin). The contrast between male and female balances well and its a pleasure to work alongside someone who is so talented. The Future Thinkin Mc's (Mojo, System, Shylo) are also a pleasure to work with, we try to create vibes, not battle each other or the DJ!
DJ’s that I've loved working with include: Addiction, Agent Orange AlleyCat Andy C, APB, Aycan, Bailey Bassface Sacha, Blame, The Bouncer, Bryan Gee, Bella, Beta 2, Breakage, Callide, Child Support, Danny Excile, Danny Shutdown, Deluxe, D.M.Cut, Doc Scott, D-Zine, Ed Rush, Electric Lane, Equinox, Fabio, Fierce, Fischermann Friction, Gambit, Grooverider High Contrast, IZM, DJ J, J-Majik, John B, Jumpin Jack Frost, DJ Kane, Kalashnikov, Kemistry (RIP) & Storm, Klute Dr Kuba, Kymatik, Marcus Taylor, Micky Finn, L Double, DJ Loki, Mampi Swift, Matrix, Mercury, Merlin, Mutiny, Nicky Blackmarket, Nu:Tone, Optical, Outlaw, Peshay, Polska, Quayola, Quest, Randall, Ray Keith, DJ Red, DJ Rob, Rohan, Rhymez, Ryan, DJ Sable, Senses, Simon Bassline Smith, Shaolin, Shy FX, DJ SS, DJ Suv, Tobestar, Top Buzz (Jason Kaye), Wildchild Wize, Zero Tolerance, Zinc, 0=0. They all play good music across different styles man!
Where do you get the influences for your chats from? Life, News, Politics, The street, Raves, Dreams, Talking to headz, Travel… For me lyrics are my form of expression, I can talk about what I see happening in the world around me, this can cover anything from relationships to music to war etc. I try to keep my lyrics real, so you will hear me talking about life as it happens to me, not pretend Americanised tings! I’m also a party mc, so I try to balance the deeper side with having a good time, I don’t think anyone wants to hear dark vocals all night when they out to rave.
How long have you been MC'ing for & how long did it take you to get your first big break? I've been mc-ing as a hobby since 1992 when I was very young and innocent :) We (Optical Noise Crew) put on our own semi-legal events and this led to more parties around the UK & Germany. In terms of commercial drum n bass (A List DJ’s & Promoters) it was getting to meet DJ SS while at university in Leicester. We got on well and bookings for Formation followed. This was around 1997-1999. I then took a couple of years break from the scene and got back into it around 2002.
What do you enjoy / dislike about being an MC? I love helping people enjoy the night, if you get a big reaction to a rhyme the buzz is wicked. Getting people coming up after a set talking to you, telling them about their night etc is wicked. I’m up on stage having fun, spreading my vibes and then I get thanked for it! You can’t beat that. I dislike not being able to get to every event on the planet. Hopefully teleportation will arrive soon!
Most memorable moment in your career... Mc-ing at 6 different raves over 6 days in 3 countries and nearly dieing in a car crash on the way home. It was amazing to see so many different styles and ravers over such a short space of time. I'll never forget the journey home, waking up to the car doing a 360 spin on snow-covered motorway in Austria. Someone protected us that day and I feel lucky to have been able to enjoy it and get home safe.
Most memorable flop? Back in 98 or thereabouts I was booked to play in Germany. The promoter sent the plane tickets to a dj I was going to play with but had never met. The DJ told me to be at the airport for 22:00. Got there to find out the plane left at 20:00 and the guy had read the times wrong. Not happy as there were no more flights that night!
Any advice you can give to up n coming MC's? Be true to yourself, nobody is interested in clones. Practise as much as possible and enjoy it. As the hip-hop crews always say, keep it real.
Shouts... Shout to everyone involved in d’n’b. For more info on future events, audio, pics etc and ....check out the raving itch website >> here
