Lowqui - Interview July 2004
Q - How long have you been involved with DnB? A - Raving started for me with house/hardcore way back in 1990 (the first rave I went to was Spiral tribe, Cisbury Ring). This was before hardcore jungle-techno, jungle or drum n bass emerged as the superior sound.
Q- Can you remember your first public appearance and if so what was it like? A- Yes – 1992 with The Optical Noise Crew. We were booked to play a one hour set (8-9pm). We smashed it so hard we didn’t come off the decks until the party stopped at 3am! We couldn’t really dj or mc but we had the tunes and the energy. The rave went nuts!
Q- How did you get your first big break in the scene? A- We (Optical Noise Crew) put on our own semi-legal events and this led to more parties around the UK & Germany. In terms of commercial drum n bass (A List DJ’s & Promoters) it was getting to meet DJ SS while at university in Leicester. We got on well and bookings for Formation followed.
Q- What tune are you feeling at the minute? A- Loads but to name just three…
Mr Majestic – Calibre & High contrast Tibetan Mist – Humanoid/clipz Artificial Intelligence – Uprising
Q- What your favourite lyrics/trick do you currently use? A- My favourite trick is to smile and enjoy myself on the mic. They say smiles are contagious! J
Favourite lyric would have to be the P-I-Double D-I /DNA structure bizness for those that know!
Q- If you were to collaborate with anyone who would it be? A- So many people I would like to work with…In dnb right now it would have to be Calibre. I would also love to make a track with MC Fats.
Q- Whats your most memorable event of 2004 so far? A- Been a few… Repercussion V Metalheadz (if u went, u kno!),mcing with Breakage & Equinox at Bassbin NYE, DM Cut & I-One at the march traffic, with Aphrodite in Germany, with Zero Tolerance at the Essence of Chi launch party, with Nu-Tone at renegade…I also really enjoyed a couple of sets I’ve done @ Kinetic in Oxford recently, Total Science and Ray Keith.
Q-What do you want to achieve by the end of 2004? A- Keep rockin raves, more travel to new dnb venues, try and get some tunes out…& find the answer to world peace (oops…that’s for the miss world application!)
Q- Who do you rate as an MC? A- Again more than one!
My traffic crew (System, Mojo, I-one, Shylo), Stevie Hyper D (Rip), GQ, Fats, Stamina, Stirlin, SP, Foxy, Eksman & the Nu breed, Five Alive, Ken Mac, Wrekka, Navigator…anyone prepared to have a go, be original and do it properly…
Q- Who do you rate as a DJ? A- DM C.U,T, Wilsh, Danny Exile, Kane, Nookie, A.I, Storm, Blame, Flight, Zinc, Ray Keith, Zero Tolerance, Rohan, T1, Outlaw n Wize, Madcap, Aphrodite, Marky, Influx, Nu: Tone, hEaling Crew…and loads more…some seriously good dj’s out there at the moment
Q- What was your back up plan in life if you weren’t doing this? A- Fate takes you on its journey, just enjoy the ride…
Q- Would you ever do top of the pops? A- If a tune of mine ever sold enough to get on top of the pops I would do a milli vanilli and get and actor to mime my part, maybe get Patrick from Eastenders, reckon he could do a mean one footed skank!
Q- Who wouldn’t you work with? A- I’d really, really, really hate to work with kylie.
Q- Favourite venue? A- Plan B (Essence of Chi), Rhythm Factory (Traffic) & Anywhere with an up for it crowd
Q- Who would you like to bed this year? A- I’m not dark, just one gal for me.
Q- What dnb forums do you use? A- Londondnb.com, DNBA, DOA
Q- Where are you playing next? A- As I write…I’m playing with Ray Keith at Desire tonight! Then Essence of Chi with Bryan Gee and Breakage, with Logistics @ Bounce, and Teebee in Germany and at Traffic…to name just a few!
Q- Where you going on holiday this year? A- Somewhere chilled but hot with some good friends.
