PHAT REVIEW:
Goldie, MC LowQui, Agent Alvin, Alion, Fiction : Phat Club : Thurs 1 September 05
Coming at the end of a long hard winter in the deep south Goldie was always going to be pushing to fill the Phat but fill it he did with the filthiest bass felt yet in a room that's seen Roni Size, Maldini, Vegas, d-Bridge, Mickey Finn, High Contrast, Klute, Digital, The Upbeats, Concord Dawn, Shapeshifter & Aphrodite.
A controlled burn from start to end with LowQui starting cold, after the Agents wicked combo with our own Alion, but ending with... a room truly on fire & no-one wanting to go anywhere...
Wickedly wicked! 5 stars!
Let's hope he'll make good on the offer to headline Phat007 next year! Phat Dave more...

REVIEW >> Goldie and MC Lowqui // Saturday 3 September 2005 @ The Ministry, Christchurch, NZ
|
|
|
A clear cold Christchurch night, perfect for a big DnB night out at the Ministry. Drum n Bass legend Goldie due to play anytime soon. Urban Notion crew ripping things up for the massive, laying the groundwork for the man with the teeth of gold.
A ripple moves through the crowd, they have spotted something going on up at the front. Two figures with huge afros and aviator sunglasses are making their way in to the booth. One steps up, to the decks, the other takes the mic. “Somebody put your hands up in to the air!”, “We’re here to put the funk, the soul glow back in to Drum n Bass!”. The crowd screams, the costumes come off, the night begins….
Goldie’s set is a tight, diverse affair. Plenty of the Metalheadz grime, the epic build-ups and breakdowns and incredible breaks that have characterised Metalheadz over the last ten years. But also a much deeper more soulful element that had not been present in Goldie’s past visits. MC LowQui’s magnificent lyrical flow holding it all together, perfectly complementing the skills of the selector.
Not far in and it becomes clear that this is not your normal Goldie set: from the look of pure enjoyment on the gold-one’s face, the total immersion of the crowd within the music and the constant complementing of the soundsystem by LowQui, something special is going on.

The standard two hours pass quickly, but there is no stopping. Nobody wants this to end, immersed in the sublime. And then it is as if we are being transported back in time, Goldie pulling out tunes that he has not played for years, LowQui grabs me “man, I have never seen G get this deep before!”.
Four hours in to his set and all is explained, Goldie grabbing the mic: “Can you tell I’m loving this?”. Then LowQui: “Oh my Days, you know what? This is hands-down the best club that I have ever witnessed, right, seriously, Christchurch New Zealand you guys are crazy”. Back to Goldie: “You are the best, got the best scene, best club, best sound, what else do you want? Do you know what? I can only play certain tunes on YOUR soundsystem, I never play them at home ‘cos I can’t play them there… I can only play them here ‘cos the soundsystem is so fucking SICK!”
One highlight of the night has to be the three new Concord Dawn dubs, all of which receive the rewind treatment. My pick has to be the track featuring Devon Abrams of Shapeshifter and Pacific Heights, with its menacing yet emotional pads and sax licks, dropping in to the most teched-out beats I have ever experienced.
Goldie finishes the night by tearing out his classic “Inner City Life”, hanging from the caging which surrounds the booth in the ministry, and generally jumping around like a maniac while the amped-up 6.30am crowd does the same, vibing off his energy.
All up, this has to be one of my favourite DnB experiences ever. The crowd loved every minute, and so too did the performers. I was impressed by the vocal skills of the MC LowQui, while Goldie kept it tight for the crowd. The NZ contingent benefited too, Goldie was so impressed with the local Urban Notion crew set that he invited them to perform with him in Sydney for the last night of his world-tour. All I can say is, watch out for the next time Goldie is in your area! And take cover!

REVIEW >> Elementz Present : Goldie, Subfocus and MC LowQui @ POW Bandroom, Melbourne (09/09/05)

Few would dispute the statement that Metalheadz founder Goldie has shaped drum and bass as we know it today. With his distinct physical features (yeah the gold teeth and the gold jewelry) and equally distinct artistic output, its mandatory attendance when he plays here.
So on this incredibly balmy September night it was off to the Prince of Wales where the Elementz crew were playing host not only to Goldie, but also to Ram records hottest new thing, Subfocus. Local support was from the likes of Motiv, JPS, Seven and Blanco.
Upon arrival at the refurbished Prince JPS was spinning a selection of upbeat dance floor friendly tunes. Already the dance floor was grooving as people soaked up the easily accessible sound and remained there as he steered the set into some darker, tech-ier territory.
Undoubtedly one of the years biggest dance floor smashers has been Sufocus' “X-Ray.” The combination of the ‘borrowed’ Nirvana bass line and the sing-along melody makes it instantly recognisable and always sends the crowd into frenzy whenever it’s played. So when it was dropped in the mix by its creator it was hardly surprising to see not only the crowd bounce, but ...

MC LowQui dancing across the limited stage space. Although the set was very party oriented, it was not superficial and without depth. It was an energetic set that remained consistent and true to the Ram sound. Cuts from Pendulum featured heavily in the set (Slam, and their Bacteria remix), as did of course Subfocus’ own material, their reinterpretation of the Prodigy’s “Smack my Bitch Up” as well as a tease of “Ghost” to name a few.
LowQui provided the necessary back up vocally but did not impose himself on the set. I’ve got to say I really enjoyed having a dance to this set!
LowQui heralded Goldie’s opening track with the proclamation that “this is brand new from Metalheadz” it was D Kay and Lee’s “Sunset,” a typical Metalheadz sounding tune, with spacey vocals and growling bass. It was a great introduction to a set that was going to go deeper and really explore sound as always Goldie does. In contrast to Subfocus, Goldie mixed tunes in longer, letting them soak into the crowd. The tunes also had more depth and space to them. There was the VIP remix of D Bridges “Bellini” (one of my faves) some Calyx and Photek’s distinct driving track “Age of Empires.”

REVIEW >> Goldie and MC Lowqui - Home Nightclub - 17/09/05
The moment had arrived. LowQui as Batman, and Goldie as Robin burst onto the stage with a force that shot through the room like a cannonball. It was 2am and the patient crowd were ready to party, and party they did.
Goldie brought it like no-one else can - that unmistakable Metalheadz sound we know and love - stealthy beats and ominous, thudding bass charged with furious emotion and hip-winding rhythm. LowQui was a true Master of Ceremonies, his buoyant energy and solid mic technique maintaining lustrous vibes until dawn. The viscerally involved MC let his love for the music burn through his voice, escalate the tunes and amplify the mood.
Saturday night was a prime example of a first-class selection and a first-class MC. Goldie delved deeper and we left in the bleary-eyed morning contented. Big ups to everyone who made this a gig to remember...

during this downunder tour... Goldie talked with Tim Schuman...
In a world full of bland DJ personalities, Goldie is larger than life. He may seen like a mad-hatter at times but when he talks about his vision for the future its hard not to listen. With a new album on the way, a massive film project on the go and his label Metalheadz firing on all four cylinders Goldie had a lengthy chat with Fikuss.
Give us the update on Goldie for starters, new Metalheadz 05 has just come out in the last month or two, a new single from yourself with a Ruffidge Kru mix as well… what’s next on the agenda release wise? more about Goldie
